NORWICH, Vt. - It was a standing room only crowd as Martha Stewart shared her tricks of the trade in a baking demonstration.
“She is the queen of baking. And for us, for King Arthur Flour, teaching people to bake is really what we are all about,” said Karen Colberg, Marketing Director with King Arthur Flour.
King Arthur Flour in Norwich Vermont hosted the event. The company also sponsors Martha’s show on PBS called ‘Martha Bakes’.
“I consider myself a teacher first and foremost. And I think that shows like these have been a little bit absent from television,” said Martha Stewart.
For two hours 80 people learned from Martha herself. She taught a master baking class featuring three recipes: a breakfast cookie, a flat bread, and a holiday stollen.
“A stollen is not boughten, as my father would say. It’s homemade and it is a yeast cake,” said Stewart.
Martha says she fell in love with baking early on, her mom taught her when she was little. She says baking is a science; you have to follow the directions carefully and measure everything out.
“And then you'll probably get something resembling the recipe and I think it takes a little practice but nobody should be afraid of baking,” said Stewart.
Martha says more younger people aren't afraid of baking and she's excited they are showing an interest in her favorite past time.
"The main thing they are pinning, the main thing they are instagramming is pictures of the food they are making. And they want to, they bake on Saturdays, they bake after school, they cook dinner for their family and they want to show it off and they want to know how. And they want to make sure that it tastes good,” said Stewart.
In the end everyone was treated to taste the finished product; recipes this group now plans to try out at home.
“I learned a lot and she made a lot of delicious recipes,” said Tracy Zuckerman, from Norwich, Vt.
“I think it’s very rare to have someone of Martha’s very high caliber come to our little city of Norwich Vermont. It was a real thrill,” said Gael Clauson, from Norwich, Vt.
After the baking demonstration Martha hosted a book signing. Martha said after her appearance at King Arthur Flour she planned to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Vermont before heading back to New York.
