Currently, residents city-wide are allowed two parking spaces per unit, no matter how many bedrooms are in that unit.
"There's been a persistant problem with having just two spaces," says Department of Planning and Zoning Senior Planner, Scott Gustin.
This new proposal would base parking space allottments on the number of bedrooms per unit. It would affect neighborhood districts and shared use districts, where people walk or share nearby parking. In neighborhood districts, the plan would give:
-2 spots to 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units
In shared use districts, such as UVM and Champlain College, the plan would give:
-1 spot to 1 and 2 bedroom units
-2 spots to 2 and 3 bedroom units
If a unit has more than five bedrooms, the number of parking spots matches the number of rooms.
"If you have more people living in your apartment, then I think those people should have spots," says UVM student Dzana Mustafic.
The overall goal is to make housing more affordable.
"If we're cutting down the required parking you need to provide in half, that should result in a lower up front cost," says Gustin. "It also results in lower ongoing maintance costs."
The Residential Parking Standards proposal has been sent to the ordinance committee. It would not affect the areas of King and Pearl streets. North Winooski to the waterfront would also be exempt.
