Milton police say they have found no evidence that two people were attacked by a bear in Milton on Wednesday.

Police say they received a report that Ladonna Merriman, 44, and Lucas Gingras, 28, both of Milton, were attacked by a bear at their hunting cabin off of Clay Ridge Road on Thursday.

Gingras told police the bear had two cubs—and it was trying to get into their cabin. “He said the bear tried getting into the cabin where he and Merriman were staying and somehow a camp stove got knocked over catching the cabin on fire,” according to the police report.

Merriman and Gingras drove to their home on Boysenberry Drive and called rescue, police said.

They were both transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Merriman has serious injuries, while Gingras has less severe, investigators said.

Police say the cabin was destroyed. The investigation is ongoing.
