MONTPELIER, Vt. - Montpelier Police released their findings in an investigation of bad checks being written to businesses. The investigation began at the end of June.

Police say the initial complaint came from the Hunger Mountain Coop after they received a number of bad checks from Colleen Crist, 34, of Montpelier, Vt. After the initial report, other businesses also complained about checks be written against a closed account and an account at a different financial institution.

Police say Crist was "kiting" checks from one account into another, in an attempt to fraudulently increase balances of her accounts.

Crist has been cited to appear in Washington County Superior Court and answer to multiple charges of false token and false pretenses.

The total loss for all of the victims have not yet been calculated, but police say the preliminary amount appears to be in the thousands of dollars. Police say victims of the fraud have been identified in Washington, Addison, and Lamoille counties.

Any person or business who received a check from Crist that was later returned unpaid should contact the Montpelier Police Department at (802)-223-3445.
