South Burlington, Vt.- It seems the time is right for South Burlington to grow.

“We've been waiting for South Burlington renaissance to take place over a number of years and it seems this last year with a new Town Manager and a new City Council, there's a lot of exciting things happening in South Burlington," said President of Lake Champlain Chamber of Regional Commerce Tom Torti.

This isn't the first time Pier 1 Imports has come to the area.

Homeport on Church Street used to be a part of the national franchise before the owner cut ties.

Torti thinks its return is a good sign.

“It shows that this is an area on the upswing, that people are willing to make investments here and it gives shoppers the opportunity to have choices," Torti said.

But more choices for shoppers, means more competition for local businesses.

“Even when some of these national chains come in it's good for local business, because it draws people to the area, that otherwise might not go," Torti said,

And businesses we talked to say they may have some overlap with Pier 1, when it comes to services.

“Competition is good, the free market is good,” Torti said. “We think in this area there is plenty of room for both the local businesses and really good high quality national chains"

But South Burlington development brings some concerns.

Some people are worried with more stores opening there will be less parking and more traffic.

“Once some of the other businesses like Pier 1 open up, I could see where it could create an issue,” said a South Burlington resident. “You know, look at the volume of customers that are coming through here just for this store alone."

Regardless many people in South Burlington are looking forward to these new stores popping up and the development of city center.
