BURLINGTON, Vt.- Something is cooking in Burlington...South End Kitchen seems like your normal grab and go restaurant. But just on the other side of the main dining room is much more then just dinner and drinks.
On the other side of the dining room wall... cooking classes take place. Ashley FitzGerald is one of the chefs that teaches the community cooking classes. She says what makes South End Kitchen's classes special is that their food is what she calls, approachable.
"I've had a lot of feedback that people that learn here can really take it with them and go do it again. And we really just try to have fun and get the kids involved so that they walk away with something new that they can share," said Fitzgerald.
The educational kitchen teaches the fundamentals of being a successful chef. South End Kitchen opened in January and since then the kitchen has offered many classes like grilling food, chocolate making, and kids cooking classes, like crepe making.
Classes are offered daily, accept students until the class is full and anyone can sign up on their website. In the summer kids can cook in the morning while adults can go to class in the evening. Some courses are more hands on than others and they range in price. Each class is suitable for chefs of all skill levels which keeps FitzGerald on her toes.
"We just accept people with open arms and that is part of the challenge of my job. With the kids, when they show up, what ages they are, or the adults, what skill level they are, so when we get started we try to find out where people are and go with it," said FitzGerald.
After all, FitzGerald said that discovering food is what South End Kitchen is all about.
