As the man charged with killing two year old Dezirae Sheldon was led out of Rutland criminal court her mother, Sandra Duby, couldn't contain her emotions.

The mother of Dezirae rushed the defense table demanding the accused, 31 year-old Dennis Duby and Sandra’s husband, answer her questions.

“What did you do to my baby,” Sandra Duby screamed in court.

Monday afternoon Dennis Duby was arraigned on charges of second degree murder for Dezirae's death.

The little girl had just turned two.

Police say last Wednesday, Dezirae was brought to Rutland Regional Medical Center with a fractured skull. She was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock later that day and died on Friday.

“This child suffered a catastrophic brain injury that lead the (medical examiner) to determine that this child was killed, that she was assaulted by another,” prosecutor Rosemary Kennedy said.

Reading police reports in court prosecutor Kennedy outlined the injuries that eventually killed Dezirae.

“Her head wounds were so severe that her skull was literally fractured from just about one ear to the other,” Kennedy said.

Police say Dennis Duby was at his Poultney home with his six week old biological daughter and his step daughter Dezirae last Wednesday. Duby says he heard a thud in another room, where he said Dezirae was. When he found the little girl unresponsive, he says he called her mother, Sandra Duby.

But police say Duby changed his story multiple times and the injuries to Dezirae's head are consistent with abuse.

Duby pleaded not guilty and is being held on $250,000 bail.
