STOWE, Vt. - Police say 64-year-old Wayne Washburn killed his wife, 59-year-old Katherine Washburn and then himself.

They received a call Wednesday and checked on the couple, finding them dead inside their home atop Cady Hill Road. Police say Katherine had head injuries. Investigators say there was evidence that Wayne overdosed on prescription drugs in conjunction with carbon monoxide poisoning.

"We were stunned," said next-door neighbor Meg Scotti. She says Kathy Washburn was a well-known artist in the community, and ran a ceramics business out of her home.

"She's very talented, extremely talented," said Scotti, showing a mug that Kathy made for her with a painting of her dog Bailey.

"I didn't know her husband well. He was quiet. Kathy was much more outgoing."

It's been more than 20 years since police investigated a murder in the picturesque town.

"I haven't heard anything like this since Patty Scoville was I was shocked," said one woman, a Stowe resident. The Scoville murder was in 1991.

Police are awaiting confirmation from the Medical Examiner's office about the causes of death.

A Facebook page says a memorial service for Katherine Washburn will be held on April 30.
