COLCHESTER, Vt. - Dozens of Vermont students competed to see who is the best speller in the state.

40 elementary and middle school students took part in the Vermont Spelling Bee at St. Michael's College.

It took 26 rounds for a winner to be crowned and it went to Liam Lustberg, an 8th grader from South Burlington.

His winning word was "pogrom" and it means the organized killing of many helpless people.
Liam will head to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington in June.
