MONTPELIER, Vt.-The traveling circus is in town but this circus is different than most. All of the performers are between the ages of ten and 18-years-old. Circus Smirkus is made up of 30 performers, called Troupers, and it travels all over New England and some of New York for seven weeks in the summer.

Eight of the Troupers are from Vermont and about half are from the New England area. They dedicate their summer to training and preparing for traveling. Some of the Troupers even go on, after Circus Smirkus graduation, to be part of other professional circuses all over.

"Working towards this goal, literally since age ten, so eight years, and being here and being able to perform for all of these audiences is literally the best feeling in the world. And knowing that I accomplished a dream of mine and I get to inspire others and make other people happy, it means the world to me," said Doug Stewart.

The show runs roughly two hours with a 15 minute intermission. The Troupers, like Stewart, are all dedicated to practicing their tricks since its different choreography every year. This year it’s called Anchors Away for Atlantis.

"We have a lot of energy and people always love our show and they always come back for more every year," said Emily Wunderle.

The theme, Anchors Away for Atlantis, is considered an under the sea adventure. The Troupers perform in Montpelier, Vermont near the Montpelier High School on August 12 and 13 at 2pm and 7pm. The grand finale is in Greensboro, Vermont on August 15 at 6pm and August 16 at 1pm and 6pm. They welcome audiences of all ages.

"My favorite part about being in the show is performing for all different kinds of audiences two times a day, it's really fun to see how they react and it's great making people’s days better," said Ivan Jermyn.

Tickets can be purchased on Circus Smirkus’ website or at the ticket booth which opens one hour before show time. Seating is first come first serve, there are refreshments in the concession tent and the show goes on rain or shine.
