BURLINGTON, Vt. - Improving the criminal justice system was the focus of a conference at the University of Vermont.

There were speakers from 12 different countries at the UVM Davis Center on Wednesday. It was about restorative justice.

Experts talked about stopping over-emphasized punishment and giving work to give victims tools to learn from their mistakes and heal.

Vermont's Former Corrections Commissioner John Gorczyk says this is a great start to changing an old system.

"We've reformed that system somewhat, but it's basically the same policy structure. I think this gives us is increasing insight and opportunity to reform those systems," Gorczyk said.

The conference will have breakout sessions through the rest of the week. It opens at 7:15 in the morning.
