ST. ALBANS, Vt.- Senator Patrick Leahy felt it fitting to talk about the Homeland Security Grants at the125th Annual meeting of the Vermont State Firefighters Association.

The grants add up to almost $7 million dollars, and go towards supporting emergency preparation and planning efforts.

Hundreds of firefighters showed up to discuss safety and prevention.

"All we're saying is lets make sure that they have the equipment available. The Hazmat Unit that the State of Vermont has is very, very important. You pray you never need them, but if you need them, they better be there," said Senator Leahy.

Congressman Peter Welch also attended.

The Vermont State Firefighters' Association has quite the history.

It's one of the oldest organizations in the country, and was established in the mid 1800's.
