Vermont Special Olympic Summer Games are Underway

BURLINGTON, VT- The competition kicked off Saturday morning at the Vermont Special Olympic Summer Games.

Thousands of people took over the fields at UVM to cheer on the athletes!

The competitions include swimming, track and field, and the ever popular bocce.

Many are gearing up for the National Special Olympic Games in just a few weeks.

Lisa Denatale, CEO Special Olympics Vermont said, "We are sending a really large delegation this year, we are sending about 50 along with some athletes, partners, coaches, and support. They've got a week long competition in a variety of events. Its really an olympic type event so theres a lot of excitement and energy about it."

The competition continues on Sunday at UVM with more events.

In two weeks athletes head to Princeton, New Jersey to represent Vermont at the national games
