SPRINGFIELD, Vt. - Vermont State Police responded to a call of an inmate death at the Southern State Correctional Facility.

Police say the inmate, Sylvester Labartino, 71, of Hubbardton, Vt. was recently diagnosed with a serious medical condition and has a history of debilitating medical disorders. He was admitted to the infirmary at the correctional facility on August 20. He died Wednesday.

Labartino's body was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner's Officer for the cause and manner of death. Police say the death appears to be due to natural causes; however, the exact cause and manner of death is pending autopsy results.

Labartino was awaiting trial for the murders of Christopher and Shane Plummer on February 12. He was incarcerated since his arrest.
