FAIRFAX, Vt. - Vermont State Police say a trooper was assaulted on I-89S between exits 19 and 18 Thursday morning. The incident happened at around 8:30 a.m.

Police say they stopped Christopher Atkinson, 41, of Enosburg, Vt., for driving with a suspended license. During the stop, Atkinson and his wife Debra Bark became irate. Bark was videotaping the incident and claimed that Vermont State Police were harassing them.

A press release says when Trooper Mattuchio attempted to explain the suspended license ticket, Atkinson attempted to hit Trooper Mattuchio with his driver side door, causing the trooper to step back into oncoming traffic. Shortly after a fight occurred in the middle of the travel portion of the Interstate. A short time later, Atkinson was taken into custody.

Atkinson was transported back to the barracks where he was processed and treated for minor injuries.
