Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin will help kick off maple season Thursday.

The Democratic governor will tap a maple tree at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe.

The maple syrup industry is a major Vermont business. According to the USDA, Vermont produced the most maple syrup in the Northeastern Region last year, producing 40.6 percent of the United States’ maple syrup.
