MONTPELIER, Vt. - Two legislative committees are holding a hearing about education Tuesday night.

Right now, lawmakers are eyeing superintendents and school districts. There are currently about 60 in Vermont.

Legislators say with fewer and bigger districts, schools could offer more to students or not have to reduce programs.

"It's not about closing schools," Rep. Joey Donovan (D-Burlington), said. "In fact, I think perhaps by going to larger disticts we might be able to keep a number of small schools open because they are alternatives. They are often a good way for some students to learn."

The public hearing is being held in the House chamber in the Statehouse.
