Through the years, there's been talk about Montpelier and U-32 combining.
Legislators held a forum Wednesday and say this was not about making any big decisions. But they want to talk about consolidation especially with school funding such a hot topic this session.
Legislators heard from people in Montpelier and the surrounding towns. They talked about their concerns about consolidating Montpelier and U-32.
Many told us school consolidation should be a local issue and the legislature's involvement should be limited.
"We really need someone who can convene the parties, fascilitate the discussion, provide resources when needed. But not one that comes in with a one size fits all approach," says Julie Moore, Rumney Memorial Schoolboard chair.
"Merging school districts is a complicated issue and it's going to take some time to do anything along those lines. I'm just against the state coming in and trying to tell, force, stuff that is not going to be educational to education," say Ed Deegan from East Montpelier.
This was just an informational meeting. Legislators plan to hold more of these forums in the future.
