Vermonters will soon decide where their local towns are headed for the next year and in some cases, beyond that.

Town meeting day is a unique tradition, one that takes a lot of work, from a lot of people, to prepare for. Just another reason  why you should get out and vote on Tuesday.

Sharon Roy has served as South Hero Town Clerk for 28 years. Her biggest project every year is getting ready for Town Meeting Day.

“We get the town report ready. Get all the financial ends of it done. We do the warnings,” explained Sharon Roy, South Hero Town Clerk. “We post them. We set up the facility where we have Town Meeting, and I have to take the minutes."

South Hero's warning is similar to others across the state: school budget and tax approvals, distributing funds and various referendums.

Elsewhere, voters have already been punching ballots.

Early voting has been going on at City Hall in Burlington for weeks now. Just about 1,000 people have either voted early or using absentee ballots.

Scott Schrader and his team in the Burlington Clerk & Treasurer's Office proof every ballot, every warning.

“We are responsible from the beginning to the end as it relates to the election,” said Scott Schrader, Chief Administration Officer for the City of Burlington.

So far, this year, he's not impressed by the turnout.

“I actually expected a higher turnout than what we've actually been experiencing so far,” said Schrader.

On average, 3,000 – 4,000 Burlington voters cast their ballots on Town Meeting Day.

And with about 21,000 eligible this year, that would be just under 17%.

“A - it is a right that not everyone in the world has and certainly they should exercise their right to vote. But B - they ought to be taking some interest and involvement in their city government,” said Schrader.

You can cast your ballots everywhere across the state on Tuesday  from 7am  -7pm.
