Williston Police Officer Accidentally Discharges Rifle

ESSEX, Vt. - A Williston Police Officer accidentally discharged a weapon Saturday night. This happened at around 8 p.m. near Pinecrest Drive in Essex.

The Williston Police Department was assisting the Essex Police Department at a reckless endangerment incident.

Police say Williston Police Officer Josh Hansell, 29, was clearing a semi-automatic rifle when it accidentally discharged in his police cruiser. The rifle was pointed in a downward direction causing damage to the floorboard and possibly to the transmission of the vehicle.

Police say the cruiser was not occupied at the time of the discharge. No one was injured.

The incident is currently being investigated by Williston Police Chief Todd Shepard. The rifle was a Williston Police Department issued weapon.

Officer Hansell remains on active duty. He has 2 years of law enforcement experience.
