VTrans is looking at ways to prevent trucks and buses getting stuck in Smugglers Notch. The Agency of Transportation is installing permanent electronic signs that will hopefully capture drivers’ attention better than the ones there now.

VTrans is also considering adding a device that would measure the length of vehicles before drivers reach the new signs. The electronic signs would direct the drivers to turn around if they could not make it through. A new law took effect this summer that upped the fines for tractor-trailers that get stuck.

The state says GPS units are also directing trucks and buses through the Smuggler's Notch. VTrans says state officials have reached out to the GPS community to try to fix the problem. The Agency says the state hopes to partner with other states with a similar problem to bring improvements to the GPS systems directing drivers through the pass.

There have been 3 incidents so far this month.
