Weather: Toasty With T'Storms (5/18 AM)

Amanda's Forecast Discussion

Good morning!

After a toasty Wednesday, it will be another scorcher Thursday with a high temp in the upper 80s to low 90s. However, we will avoid the heat wave, three consecutive days at 90° or above, as a cold front sets its sights on the North Country tonight.

Despite the heat, it shouldn't be too terribly oppressive or steamy today. The dew point temperature, a measure of low-level moisture, stays in the upper 50s to low 60s. It's when that dew point reaches the upper 60s to around 70 that it starts to really affect those supremely sensitive to heat.

Also, the air doesn't get stagnant at all today. There will be a breezy southwest wind at 10-20 mph keeping the air moving. Some stronger gusts are possible heading into this afternoon, especially in the St. Lawrence River Valley. A Wind Advisory is in effect here, for places like Massena and Malone, with gusts to 50 mph. It's not a bad idea today to secure any hanging plants, lawn games or patio furniture.

Late this afternoon and into this evening, ahead of the front, a few thunderstorms are expected to pop up. Although there is not a huge, widespread severe weather threat, there is a marginal to slight risk across the area for a storm or two to grow to severe limits. A severe storm is defined as one producing 1" diameter hail or at least 58 mph wind gusts. The greatest risk for strong to severe storms is over northern New York and the northwestern corner of Vermont, with storms expected to weaken as they move east.

Tonight, that cold front scoots through. Expect to wake up on Friday to a temp in the mid 50s to low 60s, partly to mostly cloudy skies and a few showers. Those showers should wrap-up entirely by lunchtime, with clearing skies into the afternoon. The temp tops out in the mid 60s to around 70 degrees by late Friday with a mix of sun and clouds. Northwest wind 5-15 mph.

This weekend is comfortable, refreshing, sunny and dry! Saturday and Sunday both bring ample sunshine to the table with a top temp in the mid 60s to low 70s. Rain moves back in late Sunday into Monday.

Have a great day! Stay cool!
