Catamounts Fall to Albany in America East Men's Soccer Quarterfinals

Pomare Te Anau scored twice and Thomas Manz scored once and added an assist to lead the No. 5-seeded Albany Great Danes to a 5-1 victory over No. 4 Vermont in the quarterfinals of the America East Men's Soccer Tournament at Virtue Field on Saturday.

 Pomare Te Anau scored twice and Thomas Manz scored once and added an assist to lead the No. 5-seeded Albany Great Danes to a 5-1 victory over No. 4 Vermont in the quarterfinals of the America East Men's Soccer Tournament at Virtue Field on Saturday.

The Great Danes improve to 6-10-4 overall and move on to play top-seeded UMBC on November 13 in Baltimore, Md. in the America East Semifinals.  Vermont ends its season with a record of 9-5-4.

The Great Danes took a 2-0 lead 16 minutes into the match.  Anthony Rozzano and Te Anau connected in the seventh minute.  Rozzano sent a pass into the box from the right side and Te Anau was there with a one-time finish with a low shot into the net.

In the 16th minute, during the run of play, the Great Danes served a ball into the penalty area and Thomas Manz and Bernardo Mattos were able to each flick the serve on with their heads to Dominic McGarr who finished off the sequence with his second goal of the year to give Albany a 2-0 lead.

Manz netted his own goal just before halftime to push Albany's advantage to 3-0.  His header off a free kick from Philip Persson found the back of the net in the 41st minute.

The Great Danes struck for a fourth time in the 53rd minute when Te Anau's scored on a shot from the left side of the penalty area to the far post.

Albany's lead grew to five when the Great Danes got a lucky bounce.  On a free kick by Te Anau, a UVM defender headed the ball as part of the defensive wall and the ball deflected into the Vermont's own net.

The Catamounts ruined the shutout for Albany, getting on the board in the 69th minute.  Beau Johnson finished off a pass from Brian Wright along the end line for his second goal of the year.

Michael Pizzuti made eight saves in the Albany net, while Conor Leland and Ryan Bailey combined for two stops for Vermont.
