Fairfield, VT -- Fairfield's Jeffrey Nelson is skipping this year's national Scrabble tournament this weekend in Buffalo but come Monday the top-ranked Scrabble player in Vermont will have some work to do when 5,000 new words will be added to Merriam-Webster's Official Scrabble Players Dictionary.

In the meantime, he has the 30 words already released. From BROMANCE to SELFIE, they may not seem as dignified as words like dignified or ostentatious but Nelson says the new words belong just the same.

"That is sort of the focus of releasing the new words is to bring the crustier Scrabble dictionary up to speed with the way everyone else talks and writes." said Nelson.

As an expert Scrabble player, Nelson will be less worried about BROMANCING his GEOCACHE of SELFIES and more worried about the new 2-letter words.
(edit: BROMANCE is a noun not a verb. We regret the grammatical error but hey, these words just became words).

"Strategically, the two-letter words are the most useful because those open the board in a way that other ones simply don't." Nelson explained. "GI, which is a particular martial arts robe. Also, TE is a strategically important one. Just to add to your overall choices for what weapons or what particular tools you've got in your toolbox."

The 5,000 additional words will be announced Monday but will not be officially included in tournament play until December 1st. The 5th edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary is due for release August 11th.
