"He's a quiet kid, but he does his talking on the field." said Middlebury head coach Dennis Smith. "When his opportunity knocks he's ready to go."
"I'm just running." Hathaway said after a week 1 win over Essex. "So for them to be a part of that sort of sparks a fire within the whole team. It's nice to be a part of the process of getting the whole team going."
Hathaway had one of the big plays in Friday's win, an 87-yard kick-off return with a fake reverse.
"In Middlebury there's a lot of tradition." said Hathaway. "And kick return is a huge part of that tradition. We've been running that return since I was a little boy. Every day we go out in practice and execute it until it's down to a fine art. It's just a big part of our game. Special teams."
While his intangibles are what the crowds notice most, he's just as fundamentally sound as any other player on the field.
"Cullen's a great player, and he's really fast." said Middlebury quarterback Austin Robinson. "Outside of the highlight plays he has that everyone sees he's a great blocker and a great teammate and he does that stuff really well."
