Burlington, VT -- Burlington High School senior Ilona Maher is a scorer. She's a floor general. She's one of the most physical players in the state. She's this week's athlete of the week.

"I've always just kind of had that forceful, leadership mentality within me." said Maher. "And I've always kind of pushed, and helped others to get better as well."

"A lot of respect, she plays the game really hard." BHS head coach Doug Cheeseman said. "She's a leader, she leads by example. She makes players around her a lot better."

Maher says she was taught early that you have to work hard if you want to be the best.

"He pushed me to be as tough as I can and to work my hardest on the floor." Maher said after a win over Brattleboro. "I've always just wanted to be better than everybody on the floor and work harder than everyone. Even guys, I like to work harder and be better than them."

Ilona attends the Seahorses' boys games to get ideas for her own game.

"Even when you watch their's much tougher." Maher explained. "And I'd love to play that type of game."

"Basketball, if you want to be a good player all starts with playing hard." Cheeseman continued. "And she sets that tone right off the gate."
