"Open looks I got, knocked them down." said Shungu after celebrating at Patrick Gym in early March. "And then anytime I could drive, I would go and drive and make a play for my teammates."
Shungu is the second member of the Rice roster to be named Athlete of the Week this season. Fellow sophomore Kendrick Gray shared the story of his father's passing in late December. He says it coincided with the turning point for their team.
I think after my father passed away we all came together." Gray said. "And that's what made us a championship team."
Their bond cemented how much this year's title means for Shungu.
"It means so much man, that kid has a lot of heart." Shungu said. "And just getting this one for him and the team man it means a lot. It means a lot."
Together, they represent the present and future of what could be a Green Knight dynasty.
"We know that we can push it through the end, and make another championship run." predicted Shungu.
"I think that we will probably take it next year." Gray told us. "I'm saying that right now I think we'll take it next year."
