Sandro Carissimo added 14 points and eight rebounds and Clancy Rugg chipped in 10 points. Brian Voelkel nearly added a triple double with nine points, seven rebounds and 10 assists for the Catamounts.
Matt Townsend was one of three Bulldogs in double figures with a team-high 11 points.
The Catamounts, who shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, held Yale to 25 percent shooting to take a 25-19 lead at the break.
Vermont led by six at the 15:37 mark of the second half and pushed out to a 12 point lead, its largest of the game, with an 8-2 spurt. Carissimo drained a 3-pointer, Rugg converted a three-point play and Ethan O'Day capped off the run with a dunk to push UVM in front 40-28 with 13:47 remaining.
Yale responded with a 12-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Isaiah Salafia, to climb within two, 42-40 with 10:28 left in the game.
The game remained within two possessions and Yale was able to knot the game up 53-53 on a layup by Brandon Sherrod at the 4:48 mark. Rusin shoved UVM back in front with a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs answered with a three of their own to tie the game up again at 56-56.
The Catamounts were able to pull away with some key rebounds on the defensive end and an 8-for-9 effort from the foul line over the final four minutes.
Vermont led 13-10 at the 11:31 mark of the first half and extended its lead to eight after a 3-pointer from Hector Harold and a Rusin layup. The Catamounts biggest lead of the half was nine, 21-12, at the 6:11 mark. Yale trimmed the lead to four twice, the last after a pair of free throws by Javier Duren with 42 seconds remaining in the half.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 11) when it hosts Albany in a rematch of the 2013 America East Championship game at Patrick Gymnasium.
