FINAL SCORE: Vermont 68, Albany 38
BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Vermont Catamounts used a 32-5 run sandwiched around halftime to break open a two-point contest and post a 68-38 victory over visiting Albany in a rematch of the 2013 America East Championship Game at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday night.
Vermont improves to 2-0 in America East and 8-8 overall. Albany falls to 2-1 in league play and 8-8 on the year.
Sandro Carissimo and Clancy Rugg netted 13 points each, while Ethan O'Day came off the bench to chip in 10 points in 19 minutes. Rugg added a game-high seven rebounds as well.
Gary Johnson paced the Great Danes with nine points and five rebounds.
With the score tied at 11 at the 12:50 mark of the first half, UVM out scored Albany 12-6 over the next 5:03 to take a 23-17 lead with 7:47 remaining in the half.
The Great Danes climbed back within two, 23-21, but UVM used a 9-0 run over the final 4:29 of the half to take a 32-21 lead into the break.
The Catamounts added a 23-5 run over the first 13:15 of the second half to stretch its lead to 29, 55-26, with 7:38 remaining in the game. UVM cruised the rest of the way to earn its fourth straight win and fifth in the last six games.
UVM limited Albany to 29.8 percent shooting for the game, while the Catamounts shot 50 percent from the floor in the contest. Vermont also out rebounded the Great Danes 35-27 and has won the battle of the boards in the last six contests.
Vermont will play three games in five days as America East action continues. The Catamounts travel to Maine for a Thursday night (7 p.m.) matchup against the Black Bears at the Cross Center in Bangor, Maine. UVM will then face UMBC in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday (2 p.m.) before returning home to host New Hampshire on Monday at 7 p.m.
