New Manager Szafarski Has the Nighthawks Atop the NECBL North

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks are on a two-game skid, but still one of the hottest teams in the NECBL.  13 deep in a 44 game season, they're tied for first atop the league's North Division standings.

And the Hawks are doing it with a brand new manager.  Jason Szafarski has taken over for Nick Cenatiempo who took a new job at St. Anselm in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Szafarski also serves as the head coach of the St. Michael's baseball team.  Following a 4-25 season with the Purple Knights, he may have seemed like a questionable choice, especially as a last minute hire.

However, he's brought this team together in a short period of time.

Szafarski says, "That's probably the hardest part about summer ball, is you've only got about a week to deal with these guys.  Especially with me getting the job so late.  I didn't really have time to get to know them.  I got the job Sunday, and then Wednesday we had our first dinner and then we had a couple practices and then roll the balls out there and play!"

Upper Valley will host the Vermont Mountaineers on Sunday.  The Nighthawks hold a 2 games to none lead in the best-of-seven series for the Governor's Cup.
