"Punch Out Cancer" Tournament Hits Home for S.D. Ireland Baseball

HINESBURG, Vt. - The S.D. Ireland sponsored American Legion Baseball team is wearing pink ribbons on their hats as well shirts in an effort to raise cancer awareness as co-hosts of the "punch out cancer" tournament.

Funds raised support the S.D. Ireland cancer research fund. For the players, that hits home.

S.D.I Coach Shea Ireland explains, "My father and other family members have been impacted by cancer, especially skin cancer, which our cancer research fund focuses on finding cures and treatments to help benefit people that are going through melanoma and other different types of skin cancer."

Team manager Tim Albertson adds, "We've had a lot of people fight the battle.  And we've had a lot of people win the battle, and some people are still going through the battle.  And that's kind of what we're here to support and try to find ways that we can help raise the awareness so we can find that final cure."

On Saturday, S.D. Ireland Baseball would fall 6-2 against the Clinton County Mariners and 8-6 against Brattleboro Post 5, dropping the team's record to 1-2 in the tournament.

Clinton County will have to win three games on Sunday in order to win the championship.  The Montreal Titans, Schenectady Indians and Cumberland Rhode Island's Upper Deck Post 86/14 have all clinched births in the tournament's semifinal round.
