UMBC shocks Vermont 65-62 in America East title game

BURLINGTON, Vt. - UMBC is the America East Champion after beating Vermont 65-62 Saturday morning with a game-winning three-pointer in the last seconds of the game.

The Retrievers (23-10) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while UVM (27-6) will play in the NIT starting on March 13th.

Jarius Lyles scored 27 points while shooting 5-7 from behind the arc. Lyles hit a buzzer-beater triple at the end of the first half, giving UMBC the 37-35 lead heading into the locker room.

Despite leading by as many as nine points in the first half, UVM did not make a field goal in the last eight minutes of the game, allowing UMBC to come back and tie the score 62-62 with one minute remaining on the clock.

Vermont was denied in trying to take the lead, so Lyles proceeded to wave off head coach Ryan Odom's play call and sink a three at the top of the key to give the Retrievers the 65-62 lead with 0.6 seconds on the clock.

The Catamounts attempted an inbound play, but ran out of time.

UMBC celebrated its first America East title since 2008 and its second in program history.
