Burlington Area Native Returns for First Night Performance

Hillary Capps moved to New York City 6 years ago to pursue music, but her heart never quite left the Burlington area.

First Night Burlington wouldn't be anything without dozens and dozens of performers, many of whom are local.

One of those people is Hillary Capps. Capps moved to New York City 6 years ago to pursue music, but her heart never quite left the Burlington area. That's why, this year, New Year's Eve will be a whole other kind of celebration for her: a homecoming.

Growing up in Underhill, Vermont in a musical home, singing came naturally for Hillary Capps.

"I started singing as soon as I could talk and I started playing music when I was in middle school, I was in little girl groups. In high school, I started playing guitar and piano,” remembered Hillary Capps.

But 6 years ago, Hillary left the comforts of Vermont to move to the Big Apple and pursue her dream of music.

“I love to create things and it's great to hear, whether you're listening to music or doing it on your own, just something somebody created from their soul,” said Capps.

She and her band play pop music with an organic feel, as she calls it. They perform together a few times a month in New York City.

When she got the call to perform at First Night here in Burlington, she knew she had to bring the crew up.

Hillary remembers coming to the celebration when she was a kid.

“I remember seeing the fireworks and seeing music in churches and things like that and feeling so full of love and inspiration and so much fun,” said Capps.

This year, one third of the First Night performers will be first timers like Hillary.

First Night Executive Director Tom Ayres said, "That's really part of our mission to give emerging artists in our community an opportunity to be heard and perform at first night."

And for Hillary,  it's a way for the people she loves to experience her doing what she loves.

“I've been wanting to do more shows up here. It's such a great time because everyone's home for the holidays and it's just so festive and fun. And everyone's just really looking forward to the show,” said Capps.

You can find Hillary at Memorial Stadium at 9o'clock Tuesday night. She will be releasing her first all original album on January 21st. You can find that on iTunes and she'll be selling CD's at her First Night performance.
