#16 Men's Hockey Earns Sixth NCAA Tournament Berth, Set to Face #3 Union in East Regional Friday at 2 p.m.

The 16th-ranked Vermont men's hockey team will face No. 3 Union in the East Regional of the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Friday (Mar. 28) at 2 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn. The Catamounts earned the No. 13 overall seed while Union received the No. 3 seed on Sunday afternoon as the 16-team field was revealed. UVM will be making its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history and first since 2009-10.

Friday's East Regional Semifinal will be televised nationally on ESPNU as John Buccigross and Barry Melrose call the action from Webster Bank Arena. Fans can also watch online via WatchESPN and on the WatchESPN app for mobile devices and tablets. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on WVMT 620-AM and online at SportsJuice.com with Alastair Ingram and Joe Gervais on the call.

Vermont leads the all-time series 18-10-2 against former ECAC rival Union in 30 meetings dating back to 1991. The Catamounts defeated the 12th-ranked Dutchmen 2-1 two seasons ago in the annual Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup at Gutterson Fieldhouse in the schools' first matchup since UVM joined Hockey East in 2005-06. Kevin Sneddon was the head coach at Union for five seasons before taking over at Vermont in 2003-04.

With an overall record of 20-14-3 (10-10-0 HEA), UVM is in the midst of its first 20-win season since 2008-09 when it reached the NCAA Frozen Four for the second time in school history. That season, the Catamounts beat Yale and Air Force in Bridgeport, Conn. to advance to the national semifinals against Boston University.

No. 6 seed Quinnipiac (ECAC) and No. 11 seed Providence (HEA) will face off at 5:30 p.m. in the second East Regional Semifinal on Friday at Webster Bank Arena on ESPNU. The East Regional Final is scheduled for Saturday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
