17th Annual Stowe Oktoberfest Kicks Off

The Stowe Rotary Club's version of Germany's Oktoberfest is here--for the 17th year.
STOWE, Vt. - The Stowe Rotary Club's version of Germany's Oktoberfest is here--for the 17th year.

This 2013 celebration comes with some changes, including a new venue: the Stowe Events Center.

Friday's kick-off dance was to benefit the Clarina Howard Nichols Center, a organization that works to end domestic and sexual violence.

"The funds we receive tonight will go to help our shelters," said Jane Ralph, the director of the center. "Every year we have more requests for shelter than we can meet."

Volunteers from the Rotary Club were getting ready under the big tent Friday afternoon; cooking up bratwurst, tapping kegs and laying out dessert platters.

The headliners of the night, local band The Sugardaddies, say they like to play fundraisers.

"You get people from outside the town supporting local causes as well as the local community, which always supports the cause," said Barry Lyden, who plays the keyboards for the band.

According to George Lewis, president of the Rotary Club, the event uses raises $50,000. Every penny goes to charity.

"Even if it's cloudy, it's a great chance to come inside and listen to some great German music!" Lewis said.

If you want to head over Saturday, the parade starts at 10 a.m. and beer starting flowing at 11 a.m.
