8.3.13 Cool, Unsettled Weather

Weather more typical for Autumn settles in this weekend.
High temperatures today reached the 70s in most places, but Sunday will be cooler and still unsettled.

Expect highs during the day to reach the middle 60s in the Adirondacks and Northeast Kingdom, with highs closer to 70 around the Champlain and Upper Valley. That's more typical of early Autumn than mid-Summer!

Mostly cloudy skies will be the rule Sunday, and we'll be dodging off/on showers during the day. It certainly won't be raining all day...just occasionally wet. A few thunderstorms are also possible, and any storms that do fire up, may produce some small hail.

The hail potential and cooler than average highs are related. A dip in the jet stream over the northeast has brought chilly temperatures aloft (think several thousand feet up...where planes fly). Some of that cool air gets transported to the surface, creating our cooler conditions. Meanwhile, the chilly air aloft helps to destabilize the atmosphere and promote the development of hail.

Monday will also be cool, but we'll see a return to sunshine.
