BENNINGTON, Vt. - A Bennington Sheriff's deputy pleaded not guilty to drug charges on Thursday.
A press release says Gary Harrington was arrested on Wednesday and charged with possession of regulated drugs, forgery and counterfeiting of documents, neglect of duty by a police officer, and extortion.
Harrington's employment with the department was terminated upon his arrest.
Bennington Police say they found around 700 pills and bottles that didn't have his name on them.
Harrington's attorney says they drugs were legal to help Harrington kick an addiction to painkillers.
Harrington was assigned with a variety of tasks, including working security details at the Mount Anthony Union High School. The Bennington County Sheriff's Department says their investigation has not uncovered any criminal activity while on duty at the high school.
The Bennington Sheriff says it doesn't appear Harrington committed crimes while on the job.
