Boaters & Anglers Reminded to Wear Flotation Vests

Boaters and anglers are reminded to wear flotation vests.
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is reminding Lake Champlain anglers and boaters that New York State law requires all persons aboard personal flotation devices less than 21 feet to wear a flotation vest from November 1 to May 1. This includes motorboats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and sailboats.

A press release says New York created this law in the fall of 2009 after a number of deaths involving people not wearing life jackets while boating during the spring and fall.

“After a long winter, the sight of open water and the feeling of warm sunshine can give boaters a false sense of security,” said Vermont State Fisheries Biologist Shawn Good.  “The reality is, the ice has just gone out, and water temperatures are still extremely cold. We encourage anglers and boaters to be cautious and safe while on any watercraft in the early spring.”

In Vermont, anglers and boaters under 12 must wear a personal flotation device at all times while boating.
