Burlington job fair draws hundreds

With the recent layoffs at IBM, the Department of Labor held a job fair Monday to help people search for a new career.
“I'm very hopeful that I might- that I will be able to find a job,” said Michelle Andun, as she searches for a new job.
Andun was among the hundreds of people on the hunt for a job at the Sheraton in Burlington.
“I was kind of intimidated at first. But once I walked around and got to talk to people - just went up and said hello, people were very friendly,” said Andun.
The Vermont Department of Labor hosted the job fair - mostly geared toward the workers laid off from IBM.
But Annie Noonan, Commissioner, says it was also for anyone searching for a job.
“This gives people the opportunity to get their resumes out and do some of the interviews that we think they will get as a result of this,” said Noonan.
Along with more than 80 employers searching for new hires- the fair also included seminars on resume writing and interview skills.
“Vermont is open for business. Vermont employers are hiring -don't get discouraged.
Some former IBM employees spoke off camera, saying they are optimistic about new opportunities.
While others say their skills are very 'job' specific, so unless they change careers, they may have to move elsewhere to find work.
But Andun says she found potential employers and is excited about the new possibilities.
“It’s good to talk to different people and companies to figure out maybe that's not what I want to do for the rest of my life - it is encouraging,” said Andun.
Noonan says the Department plans to hold another job fair in about six weeks - that would include a new set of employers.  But she says if anyone is still having a hard time finding employment, contact the Department of Labor. They have a list of resources to help you find a job.
