At Monday night's City Council meeting in Burlington, Church Street Marketplace Executive Director Ron Redmond had some good news, and bad news.
As of May, the vacancy rate is down to one percent. Since GAP and Athleta are moving into the empty spaces on the top of the street, only one space is unfilled.
2013 sales are down from 2012, according to the report.
After surveying businesses on the street, retail sales are down compared to the dining on church.
Out of 37 businesses who responded, 51 percent said their sales took a hit.
This is the first decline in sales since they began collecting this data in 2003.
But there could be a way to turn this around. To boost sales and promotions, the Marketplace will work with Burlington Telecom, CEDO and other organizations to bring Wi-Fi to downtown.
In doing so, they hope to develop an app that would send personalized text messages to those who want to opt in for deals on their favorite retail spots.
