Community Celebrates Grand Opening Of Stowe Arena

The Jackson arena was torn down earlier this year after nearly 40 years in service to make way for the Stowe Arena.
STOWE, Vt.- A long awaited new ice arena opened its doors in Stowe Saturday.
In 2012 voters in Stowe approved a $6.5 million dollar bond to make the project a reality.
The Jackson arena was torn down earlier this year after nearly 40 years in service to make way for the Stowe Arena.

Kids and adults laced up to take a spin on the ice at the new Stowe Arena.
“It’s very exciting, we are so glad to finally have the doors open and be able to skate here every day,” said Melody Benson, a skating instructor.
Benson says before this arena was built her students either traveled to an ice rink in a neighboring town, or practiced in the cold, outdated Jackson Arena.
“I used to freeze to death teaching the Friday programs here, but now it will be much warmer, much more comfortable and we just love the new facility,” said Benson.
The community came out Saturday to celebrate the arena's grand opening. Part of that ceremony featured ice skating demonstrations on the new ice rink that's large enough to host an NHL game.
“I keep hearing the word surreal, people just can't believe it,” said Matt Frazee, Stowe Parks and Recreation Director.
Frazee says this arena was built in just a few short months and opened right on schedule.
While the building is complete there are some final touches that still have to be complete inside.
“We are working on getting some dasher boards put up here and banners to get some visibility for some local businesses,” said Frazee.
Frazee says the town has some big plans for its building.
“You know hopefully bringing in a lot of tournaments and a lot of people from the outside,” said Frazee.
Frazee says that includes hockey tournaments in the winter and soccer and lacrosse tournaments in the spring when the rink is transformed into a turf field.
Before those plans are underway the ice already got the approval from local figure skaters.
“The ice is great. We've tested it out a few times this week already, it’s just a beautiful facility, very comfortable, we are going to love it,” said Benson.

The first big event is December 14th at the Stowe Arena.
Frazee says they are hosting the Bruins Alumni game from 7-9pm. For more information click here.
