Fox44/ABC22 Athletes of the Week: Colchester Lacrosse Captains

This week's Fox44/ABC22 Athletes of the Week are the captains for Colchester Girls Lacrosse, in their first year as a varsity program.
For the first time this season, the Colchester Girls Lacrosse team can practice, play, and compete as a Varsity program.

"We were like, finally," says Molly Carver. "At first we heard it was only going to be two years and we were ready last year but then we heard it was going to be club again. So we were pretty heartbroken but when we got the news that this year was going to be the year we were more than ready."

For three years, the Lakers have been a club team, and for all three of those years captains Molly Carver, Summer Colley and Lauren Hutchings have worked hard to bring the team to the Varsity level.

"It's honestly so amazing because it's like the culmination of all of our hard work." added Summer Colley. "Our freshmen year was definitely a really rough year because we didn't even know if we were going to have a program."

"For us it's especially meaningful because the people that helped us start this program never actually got to see it become varsity because they graduated in the past two years. So I think for us we're trying to really cherish it."

It hasn't been easy. Spring sports in Vermont face countless obstacles with the weather hardly cooperating.

"It's been tough, especially since we've been inside because of the snow in a small gym practicing. It's been tough but now that we're outside we're ready to work a lot harder."

Now the Lakers are adjusting to the competition at the Varsity level. With strong performances against programs like CVU, the future is bright.

"Even though we're D-2 and a first year varsity team we fought hard against a D-1 varsity team so I think we've improved a lot."
