Giving Part of Yourself, Saving Another's Life

After waiting for nine months, one woman has a new kidney and a new beginning.
BURLINGTON, Vt.- When Judy Harrington was diagnosed with kidney failure, she and her husband hoped for a miracle.  After nine months of waiting, a miracle happened early Tuesday morning.

"It just has hit me," says Judy Harrington.  "I got a little shaky, but other than that, I feel great and I feel very blessed."

Most of the time, that other person is someone who has passed away.  In this case, it means Judy has another chance at living.

"Somebody gave something very precious that was theirs to give so I could keep loving my wife," says Judy's husband, Arthur Harrington.

Non-profit organization, Donate Life Vermont, says there are more than 100,000 people in the U.S. like Judy, waiting for an organ transplant.  This includes more than 100 people in Vermont.

"You feel grateful that you were the one to recieve it," says Judy Harrington.

People can sign-up to be an organ donor at the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Donate Life Vermont also has more information on the website, http://www.donatelifevt.org/home .
