STOWE, Vt. - It's a bit later than usual, but maple sugar season is officially here!
Governor Shumlin celebrated by heading to Stowe to perform the ceremonial first tap.
Vermont is the leading producer of maple goods in the U.S., only Canada rivals the state on the international level. Officials say the industry continues to grow.
"We're seeing and hearing farmers and sugarbush managers adding 10 to 20 thousand taps in a year's time," Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross said.
More sugarers are also using a technology called reverse osmosis. That process reduces the water in sap and gets to the syrup more quickly, which is also more energy efficient.
