Green Up Day is On! Clean up Vermont on Saturday, May 3rd

The president of Green Up Vermont says funding has been reached for the 44th annual Green Up Day.
MONTPELIER - The president of Green Up Vermont says funding has been reached for the 44th annual Green Up Day.

It will be held Saturday, May 3rd.

The event runs on a $125,000 budget, and there was concern that the money wouldn't be raised in time. But Green Mountain Power donated $20,000, closing the gap.

Some corporate sponsors dropped funding to Green Up Day, including Ben & Jerry's.

"We were told they had budget cutbacks, so Green Up Day was one of the things they chose to cut back on," said Melinda Vieux, President of Green Up Vermont. "Some other reasons for corporations cutting back included increased requests for human services funds..and some of them growing, nationally and internationally so they had less money to spend in Vermont."

For future funding, there is a bill working its way through the Statehouse that would add a check-off box on the Vermont state tax return. Vermonters could elect to donate money to the cause.
