Jericho-Underhill Considers Land Sale

In Underhill and Jericho, people are learning more about a plan to sell a large farm to help the fire department.
UNDERHILL, Vt. - In Underhill and Jericho, people are learning more about a plan to sell a large farm to help the fire department.

On Monday, firefighters held a meeting to explain the land sale.

The Underhill-Jericho Fire Department received 125 acres of land, a house and a barn almost thirty-years ago. Now firefighters want to sell it for one-point-five million dollars.

They say they have not been able to receive any grants recently to pay to replace equipment.

"We are trying to build a reserve of funds so that we don't have to come to the town and ask for a 500,000 dollar increase in one year to buy all this new equipment. We are trying to be fiscally responsible," says 1st Assistant Chief Mathew Champlin, Underhill-Jericho Fire Department.

But some people in town are concerned if the land is sold it will be developed.

The Jericho selectboard will decide what to do with the land in March.
