Man Accused of Breaking Into Car & Stealing Purse in Burlington, VT

A man is accused of breaking into and stealing a purse from a motor vehicle at Leddy Park on October 21.
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A man is accused of breaking into and stealing a purse from a motor vehicle at Leddy Park on October 21.

Police say Brian Abair, 47, of Burlington, Vt., used the victim's debit card to make ATM withdrawals at two different banks. Surveillance video showed Abair being dropped off at banks and conducting the transactions. Police say Abair tried to block the ATM camera while making the transactions.

On Monday, police located a vehicle observed in the surveillance video traveling on North Street. After stopping the vehicle, police identified the passenger as Abair. He is being charged with false pretenses, identity theft, and violation of conditions of release.

Police say Abair was arrested for using a stolen credit card earlier his year and has an active pre-trial conditions of release for that offense.

Abair was lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Center for the lack of $10,000 bail.

Police say he has a lengthy criminal history which includes felony convictions of burglary, uttering a forged instrument, and escape.
