Man Nearly Struck by Lightning

A North Country man was nearly struck by lightning just after noon Thursday.
BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. - A New York man had a very close call Thursday. That man, Leroy Brown, escaped injury by just feet shortly after noon.

“I was driving my machine up the driveway and I heard a loud bang. When I put the machine back in my equipment building I looked at the driveway and the driveway was just deteriorated. It exploded," he said.

That huge bang was lightning hitting either a pole or tree while he worked outside. The charge blasted through Brown's driveway, and startled neighbors on Agnew Road in Beekmantown.

"My neighbor across the road said all his pictures fell off the walls," Brown said.

Inside his own house, Brown says electronics started smoking.

"I had an electrical company come up and they said we probably lost all the appliances.”

New York State Electric and Gas Corporation was also called to the scene due to transformer damage.

The fire department tells us there were no other lightning strikes reported in Beekmantown, or Clinton County, but in the Upper Valley another lightning strike was reported. That was in Hartford, Vermont.

The building struck on Route 14 now has a small hole in its side where the lightning hit. No one was injured.
