Montpelier Preps for Flooding

The city is bracing for the Winooski River to crest Tuesday night. It would put water levels one foot too high.
MONTPELIER, Vt.- Montpelier braced for flooding Tuesday night.  City officials prepared for the Winooski River to crest at 16 feet, which would put water levels one foot too high. 

"It certainly won't be anything like the flooding we had back in 2011, but we do prepare for flooding, no matter what," says City Manager William Fraser.

Certain parking lots will close at 6 p.m.  The city's Emergency Operation Center will open at 7 p.m.  Hundreds of sand bags have been stored at the city's fire department, in case of emergency.

Storm drains and key culverts were cleaned out to accommodate the large amount of rain expected.  Also, Fraser says Vermont Emergency Management will be contacted frequently for updates.  

"We're making sure we have sufficient patrol on and communications in place," says Fraser.
