Monday marked a historic step for the Burlington City Council.
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Monday marked a historic step for the Burlington City Council.

Three new councilors were sworn in.

Among them was Bianka LeGrand, a democrat. She came to the U.S. from war-torn Bosnia at age 17.

LeGrand went on to graduate from UVM and Norwich, and become a businesswoman.

Her election marks the first time a member of the recent new Burlington communities will serve on the council.

"Vermont community in general is very unique. People are very helpful. Communities are strong and with this role moving forward recognize it even more," says LeGrand.

Councilors voted to keep Democrat Joan Shannon as the council's president for another year.
